A septic system is an efficient, self-contained, underground wastewater treatment system.

Septic systems treat and dispose of household wastewater on site.  They are economical in rural areas where lot sizes are larger, and houses are spaced widely apart.  Septic systems are simple in design, using natural processes to treat the wastewater on site, usually in a homeowner's backyard.

Hood River County Environmental Health is contracted by the Oregon State Department of Environmental Quality to conduct Site Evaluations, issues Permits, and perform inspections for all systems producing less than 2500 gallons of wastewater per day.  Larger systems, or systems that produce greater than residential strength waste, are permitted directly by the DEQ WPCF Program.

A permit is required before beginning any construction, alteration, or repair of a septic system or any part thereof.
