Active Rx for summer health

Family pool fun for all ages

Family pool fun for all ages

Summer is the season for kids to have summer fun, and a great time to cool off in a pool and improve swimming skills. But swim lessons and pool passes aren’t easy to come by for everyone. With grant funding from the Columbia Gorge Health Council, Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District is again offering the Active Rx program for families with financial need.

The purpose of this program is to ensure all people have access to the pool and the Learn to Swim program. If you or someone you know receives any type of social service benefit (like SNAP, WIC, Foster Care Providers, Oregon Health Plan, Free and Reduced Lunch Program, or Senior Services), then you are eligible to participate in the Active Rx program to swim or take swim lessons for free. All that’s needed to qualify is the ability to answer “yes” to the question, “Does your family receive a social service?”

Each person in a family that qualifies for Active Rx can receive two of the following services:

  • 10-Time Punch Card
  • Monthly Pass
  • Swim Lessons
  • Summer Family Pass (valid from last day of school to Labor Day, limited quantities)

“We have open swim daily from 1-5 p.m. with a rope swing, basketball, floaties and kickboards,” said Marcie Wily, assistant director at Hood River Valley Parks and Rec. “It’s a great way for families to spend a summer afternoon together.”

How to get started?

Stop by the front desk at the Aquatics Center (1606 May Street, Hood River) and ask to participate. For more information about the program, visit hoodriverparksandrec.org/pool-rates or call 541-386-1303.
